Robert Bowen
I am designer and architecture graduate from The UCT School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics. I have a strong interest in architecture as a part of the city and the role a building can play beyond its site. My interest in city building has led to me becoming a contributor for the online think-tank Future Cape Town.
I harbour deep fascination with the sometimes hidden and less obvious contextual informants that characterise place. Half recalled memories, incorrect histories and local traditions sometimes manifest themselves in the built environment. This was probably a result of my time as an undergrad history and theory tutor but for better or worse, inspired my masters thesis.
The World According to Graaff investigated this magical aspect to architecture and exlored its potential, while providing a piece of urban infrastructure in the form of a district cooling plant.
When not writing or designing, I might be found doing DIY, running down the mountain or photographically documenting the city and its less popular spots for my blog.
